Bayern Munich’s star, Alphonso Davies, led Canada in their 2024 Copa America opener against the reigning world champions. Despite an impressive performance, Canada suffered a 2-0 defeat. Davies has frequently outshined Messi in matches between Bayern Munich and Barcelona during Messi’s time in Europe, including Bayern’s notable 8-2 victory in the UEFA Champions League.
Davies first swapped jerseys with Messi after a game between Bayern Munich and PSG, as he couldn’t secure Messi’s shirt following the 8-2 thrashing in August 2020. This time, the exchange was smoother as Messi’s Argentina began their Copa America title defense with a win.
A video shared on social media captured Davies and Messi sharing a friendly moment after the match as they exchanged shirts. “It’s always special to get a shirt from Messi. He is the best player in the world. Being on the pitch and playing against him is truly an honor,” Davies said in a post-match interview.
Canada will next face Peru, while Argentina will play against Chile in Group A of the Copa America.
